WELL MIND | A Magical Morning Routine

As you softly lay down your head on your favorite pillow, your body relaxes, sinking down into the bed. You exhale a sigh of satisfaction as you reflect on your day. It felt full, joyful and purposeful – you achieved the things you set out to do while keeping a balanced mind, body and soul. You’ve taken small steps towards your goals for the future while keeping yourself firmly planted in the present.

Sounds great right? Except this kind of life feels like someone elses.

In your reality, you flop down exhausted into bed, so worn out you cannot even reflect on the day. You quickly run from one thing to another.  You can’t barely keep up with the demands of the present, let alone create the life of your dreams.

You know the things that you WANT to do but there doesn’t seem to be any time to do them. There are so many things you want to learn, or do, or ‘become’ but HOW?

I’m going to let you in on a little secret (which is not really a secret). There is a key common factor among many highly successful and fulfilled people. Most of them have a morning routine.

I know! I know! You've heard that before, and just like me, you have thought, there’s no way I can fit that in my schedule, I'm too EXHAUSTED to get up any earlier than I do.

Listen WellWomen, I have to tell you that it really, honestly, truly is LIFE-CHANGING! Before you stop reading because you’ve read about morning routines before, hear me out and then keep reading to find out exactly what my routine looks like.

Before implementing a morning routine, my life was good – but I often felt that my day was more reactive. I never quite got around to the things I actually wanted to do and achieve, I never seemed to have enough time, and I had the inkling that my daily life wasn’t quite as good as it could be.

Along with WellWomen co-founder, Hannah Northcott, we developed and created a Magical Morning routine based on the daily practices that so many successful people have implemented in their daily lives to see amazing results.

Success doesn’t mean that you’re aiming to be in the Fortune 500 list or you want to be a CEO (although a lot of people in those fields have a morning habit). It just means that you want to LIFT YOUR LIFE to another level where you start to feel more in control of your present and future while feeling more integrated in all areas of your life.

If you know me, you would know that I have never been a morning person. I’m an enneagram 9 and one of my characteristics is being a sleeper. I also have failed in consistency for a long time but after practicing Magical Morning during this quarantine season, I discovered something that I know can positively impact your life as well.

Here’s what a typical 'MAGICAL Morning' looks like for me now.

I usually start at about 5:15am. Remember, this is the woman who used to struggle out of bed at 6:30 and applaud the ladies who would get up at 5:30am in our fitness group whilst thinking ‘ha I could never do that!’

MMeditate

Mindful 2-5 minute meditation has literally transformed my life. It centers me, grounds me, brings me fully into my body.

AAffirmation

I listen to various affirmations on my favorite affirmation podcast (Affirmation Pod) to help boost my confidence, or just to set me in a positive mindset for the day.

G Gratitude

This part of my routine I usually do before bed using the ‘What Went Well’ strategy I have blogged about here. Reflecting on the successes of the day keeps me focused and excited to do it all over again tomorrow. In the morning I also spent a couple of minutes in gratitude while drinking my morning coffee (So. Much. Joy)

I Imagination

Every day I write down 10 short and long term goals and dreams that I have. This helps remind me what to focus on during the day, and later, while planning my to-do list, I will often incorporate small steps towards these goals.

Create

I don’t usually do this first thing in the morning, but later in the morning. I spend time either creating content for WellWomen, creating a piece of art work, or even creating in my garden.

A Action

After my meditation, affirmation, imagination, I get my body moving for 30 minutes by going for a run or doing an online workout using BeachBody On Demand. I share my fitness progress in our WellFitness group; they help me be accountable.

LLearn

I make time to learn something new every day, either by watching a short youtube video, doing 10 minutes towards an online course, reading a book or blog, or listening to a podcast.

There is so much I could say about the benefits of a morning routine, but mostly, what I love is how it makes me feel - integrated,  powerful and determined to take steps toward my goals.

Yes, it's HARD to get up earlier than you are used to. For me, it is worth it. I feel so much more balanced and I am AMAZED by the results that have come just by getting up an hour earlier to do these things for myself. This 'sleeper' now is so excited to get up in the morning.
